The Indian interest in the main draw of the French Open singles, starting Sunday, – Somdev Devvarman, ranked 66, and Sania Mirza, 74, – will have to hit the ground running, having drawn tough opponents for their opening round engagements.

Somdev Devvarman took his singles rankings to a new high by climbing to number 68 in the ATP chart while Sania Mirza rose three rungs to 74 in the WTA list, released on Monday. Somdev gained two positions by making the quarter-finals of the Serbia Open, where he lost to Janko Tipsarevic last week.

India’s top ranked men’s and women’s players, Somdev Devvarman and Sania Mirza climbed up the rankings in the charts released by ATP and WTA on Monday.

Somdev reached a new high ranking of 68 on the Association of Tennis Professionals list while Sania’s ranking also rose by three and she is now 74 on the Women’s Tennis Association list.

India’s Sania Mirza jumped 17 places to 73 in the women’s singles rankings while Somdev Devvarman slipped a spot in the men’s singles rankings, released Monday.

Sania last week reached the quarterfinals in a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour event at Charleston after three-and-a-half years.

Indians Sania Mirza and Somdev Devvarman advanced to the last sixteen in the WTA and ATP Tour events in Charleston and Houston in contrasting fashion late on Tuesday.

While Sania worked her way past American Vania King 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 6-2 in 2 hours and 31 minutes, Somdev made light of American Robert Kendrick’s challenge winning 6-2, 6-1 in 62-minutes.
