Sania scores; Somdev falls

It was a mixed bag for India on the opening day of the final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open. Sania Mirza scored a 77-minute 6-3, 6-2 win over Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal while Somdev Devvarman came up short against South African Kevin Anderson, falling 3-6, 4-6, 3-6 in a little over two hours.

Sania to face Ksenia in US Open qualifiers

Forced to go through the qualifiers to compete in the US Open due to low ranking, Sania Mirza has been drawn against Russian Ksenia Lykina in the first round.

This is for the first time ever since her breakthrough year in 2005 that Sania has to go through the qualifiers to play in a Grand Slam.

Somdev, Sania climb up the rankings

sadsaSomdev Devvarman moved up seven places in the latest ATP rankings to attain a career high ranking of no.124 in the world. This is Somdev’s third tryst with the 120s, having started the year just outside the top 200s, the Indian ace climbed up to 129 in June and then 127 in July before sliding down to the 160s in August.

Sania, Somdev advance to second round

sania-01cSeventh seeded Indian Somdev Devvarman demolished 281st ranked Spanish player Gillermo Olaso 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hr 7 minutes to enter the second round of the $1,25,000 Tashkent Challenger, an ATP Challenger series event being played at the Olympic tennis Stadium on Monday. However, India’s wildcard entrant Rohan Bopanna crashed out in the opening round itself.
