Sania enters 2nd round of Indian Wells Open

IND1129A.JPGWild card Sania Mirza came back from the brink to beat Ukrainian Mariya Koryttseva in a grueling three-setter and enter the second round of the $4.5 million BNP Paribas Open here.

Sania trailed 2-6, 1-3 before bouncing back to win the match 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and set up a tough clash against 12th seed Italian Flavia Pennetta, who got a first-round bye.

Vera Zvonareva of Russia and India’s Sania Mirza won semifinal matches Saturday and will play for the title at the Pattaya Open on Sunday.

The top-seeded Zvonareva easily breezed past seventh-seeded Shahar Peer of Israel, 6-1, 6-4. Peer won this title in 2006. Mirza, meanwhile, pulled out a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 triumph over eighth-seeded Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia.

Mirza is a superstar in India, but plenty of Indian muslims want to kill her. Tennis players are very vulnerable. Ask Monica Seles. I don’t see how Mirza or Pe’er can even play knowing there might be a crazed Jihadi in the stands ready to attack. In the case of Pe’er, I certainly wouldn’t trust tennis officials to protect a Jew/Israeli.

Sania Mirza lost the first set but rallied to beat Shahar Peer.INDIAN WELLS: Sania Mirza continued her domination of Shahar Peer, defeating the ninth-seeded Israeli in three sets, to reach the fourth round of the Pacific Life Open here on Sunday. Sania triumphed 6-7(7), 7-5, 6-3 for her third straight win over Peer in four meetings.
