Venus battles past Mirza

xinsrc_2921103271137859369595Number two seed Venus Williams needed three sets to beat Indian Sania Mirza 6-1 3-6 6-2 in the second round of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston.

After powering through the opening set, Williams was pegged back in the second by a spirited Mirza, who came back from 3-1 down to win five games on the spin.

Sania-Chuang falter in semis

sania-mirza_316 Sania Mirza and Chia-Jung Chuang of China bowed out in straight sets against third seeds Lisa Raymond of USA and her Czech partner Kveta Peschke in the women’s doubles semifinal of the USD 4.5 million Miami Masters here.
The unseeded Indo-Chinese duo lost 6-7 (5/7) 4-6 making way for Raymond and Peschke to enter the final of the prestigious hard court event here late last night.

Dokic commits to tourney

412804669Tournament officials for the MPS Group Championships announced commitments from Jelena Dokic and Sania Mirza on Friday.

Dokic and Mirza are scheduled to join 2006 Bausch & Lomb Championships winner Nadia Petrova, who is currently ranked No. 9 in the world.
