Indians Sania Mirza and Somdev Devvarman advanced to the last sixteen in the WTA and ATP Tour events in Charleston and Houston in contrasting fashion late on Tuesday.

While Sania worked her way past American Vania King 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 6-2 in 2 hours and 31 minutes, Somdev made light of American Robert Kendrick’s challenge winning 6-2, 6-1 in 62-minutes.

Sania progresses to pre-quarterfinals of Charleston WTA event

Indian qualifier Sania Mirza edged past Vania King in a three-set battle to book a pre-quarterfinal berth in the WTA Family Circle Cup here.

Showing nerves of steel, Sania erased a one-set deficit to score a 6-7(6) 6-4 6-2 win over in-form local player in the second round of the $ 721,000 hard court event.

Sania Mirza reaches semis in Japan Open

sania-mirzaSania Mirza today advanced to the Japan Open semifinals after her second-seeded French opponent Marion Bartoli retired midway through the quarterfinal due to a shoulder injury with the Indian leading 6-4 2-0 here.

With Bartoli hampered by a right shoulder injury, Sania controlled the proceedings in the hour-long match, although the Indian said she did not play all that well.

India’s Sania Mirza stormed into the $220,000 Japan Open tennis quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ukraine’s Viktoriya Kutuzova in the second round here Wednesday.

The 22-year-old Hyderabadi, who defeated fifth-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer in the first round, now plays second-seeded Marion Bartoli of France.
