Earlier this year Sania Mirza received a hero’s welcome in India after she became the first woman from the world’s second most populous nation to win a Grand Slam title – the Australian Open mixed doubles, with Mahesh Bhupathi. But the 23-year-old has never shied away from making statements off court as well, and on Sunday she lent her status in support of an anti-terrorism event held in the capital, New Delhi.

Sania Mirza moves up three spots

saniamirza1198982842Sania Mirza moved up three places to be No. 71 in the WTA singles rankings issued on Monday. She, however, slipped to 46 in doubles, a loss of two slots.

Mahesh Bhupathi, meanwhile, replaced Leander Paes at No. 7, a gain of one position, in the ATP doubles rankings.

Somdev, Sania rise in singles rankings

Somdev owed his rise to his stellar show at the Legg Mason Classic in Washington, where the Indian qualifier stunned world No. 15 Marin Cilic in the second round before Ivo Karlovic ended his dream run.

Sania withdraws from Aegon International

The Indian ace was trailing 4-6 2-3 against Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania on Sunday when she opted out of the contest.
