IND1129A.JPGWild card Sania Mirza came back from the brink to beat Ukrainian Mariya Koryttseva in a grueling three-setter and enter the second round of the $4.5 million BNP Paribas Open here.

Sania trailed 2-6, 1-3 before bouncing back to win the match 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and set up a tough clash against 12th seed Italian Flavia Pennetta, who got a first-round bye.

untitledIndia’s Sania Mirza rallied from a set down to beat Mariya Koryttseva of Ukraine 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the $4.5 million BNP Paribas Open here.
The 87th-ranked Indian wildcard Thursday struggled with her serve initially and was broken thrice by her 96th-ranked opponent in the first set. But 22-year-old Sania bounced back to win the other two sets and closed the match in 89 minutes.

Hertogenbosch: Sania Mirza shocked fifth seed Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the second round of the Ordina Open here on Monday.

There was good news for India in the men’s section as well, with Rohan Bopanna advancing to the second round of the Wimbledon warm-up event on grass.

Sania moves to Round 2 at Ordina Open

Sania Mirza swept aside fifth-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta in straight sets to move into the second round of $175,000 Ordina Open at’s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands Monday.

It was expected to be a tough opening match for Sania, who made a first round exit in her comeback match at DFS Classic tournament in Birmingham last week.
