Sania upsets Pennetta; Bopanna advances

Hertogenbosch: Sania Mirza shocked fifth seed Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the second round of the Ordina Open here on Monday.

There was good news for India in the men’s section as well, with Rohan Bopanna advancing to the second round of the Wimbledon warm-up event on grass.

Sania Mirza swept aside fifth-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta in straight sets to move into the second round of $175,000 Ordina Open at’s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands Monday.

It was expected to be a tough opening match for Sania, who made a first round exit in her comeback match at DFS Classic tournament in Birmingham last week.

Sania Mirza crashes out from Moorilla Hobart International tournament by losing to Italian player Flavia Pennetta. Pennetta defeated Sania in three sets 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. Sania had many chances to broke the Italian, but due to error prone play she couldn’t make it. Mirza had 12 break points through out the match, but she wasted seven out of it.

Sania Mirza came back to home Hyderabad, because injury doesn’t allow her to play. Sania’s stomach muscle gets pulled during the quarterfinal match against Flavia Pennetta in Japan two weeks ago. Sania had already struggled with two serious injuries (knee and wrist) in past.
