Top seed Jelena Jankovic became the last player to start her first match Wednesday night in the 54-player East West Bank Classic at Home Depot Center. And it took her almost as long to get going before defeating Long Beach’s Vania King, 7-5, 6-2, in a match that featured a rare critical reversal on instant replay.

Sania Mirza and her American partner Bethanie Mattek bowed out of the WTA East West Bank Classic tournament after retiring midway through their semifinal match.

Second seeds Sania and Mattek were trailing 2-6, 1-2 when they pulled out of their match against the Czech pair of Eva Hrdinova and Vladimira Uhlirova in the tier II $600,000 hard court event.

India’s Sania Mirza began her campaign in the $600,000 East West Bank Classic tournament on a wining note, as she dispatched Czech qualifier Eva Hrdinova in straight sets here at Carson. Sania, seeded 16th, beat Hrdinova 6-3, 6-4 at the hard court event in one hour and seven minutes.
