Somdev, Sania climb in rankings

India’s top ranked men’s and women’s players, Somdev Devvarman and Sania Mirza climbed up the rankings in the charts released by ATP and WTA on Monday.

Somdev reached a new high ranking of 68 on the Association of Tennis Professionals list while Sania’s ranking also rose by three and she is now 74 on the Women’s Tennis Association list.

Sania Mirza and her Russian partner Elena Vesnina continued their good run at the Madrid Open, storming into the quarter-finals after notching up a straight-set win over Nadia Petrova and Anastasia Rodionova.

The unseeded Indo-Russian combination recorded a 6-3 7-5 win over the Russian-Australian pair in the second round of the euro 3,500,000 clay court event.

Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza and her partner Elena Vesnina of Russia registered an upset victory over eighth-seeded Czech pair of Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova to move into the second round of the women’s doubles euro 3,500,000 Madrid Masters tennis.
