India’s Sania Mirza saw her comeback to tennis halted when she lost to Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn in the second round of the WTA tournament here on Thursday.
Mirza, in her first event since marrying Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and first since February, took the opening set against her experienced opponent but Tanasugarn went on to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in a match spread over two days on the grass courts at Edgbaston because of rain.
All was going well for Mirza until rain halted play after the first set on Wednesday.
The break seemed to benefit 14th seed Tanasugarn, who edged a close second set and then powered away to take the third at a tournament that serves as a warm-up for Wimbledon, the only grasscourt major.
Meanwhile, former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova won twice in a day as organisers struggled to get this rain-marred event back on track.
Sharapova, the second seed and a two-time champion in Birmingham, first completed a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States.
The Russian was leading 4-0 when the rain came on Wednesday but returned on Thursday to complete a comprehensive victory.
Sharapova then saw off compatriot Alla Kudryavtseva 6-3, 6-1.
Chinese top seed Li Na ended British interest in the singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Anne Keothavong.
Laura Robson, Britain’s 16-year-old junior Wimbledon champion, was beaten 7-5, 6-4 by third seed Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium
