Shoaib-Sania marriage gets coverage in British media

The marriage of Pakistani Test cricketer Shoaib Malik and Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has been reported in the leading British newspapers.Three leading dailies, including ‘The Guardian’, ‘The Independent’ and the ‘Evening Standard’, reported the event in-depth which took place in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad Deccan on Monday.
According to ‘Evening Standard’, “the unusual cross-border romance captivated the people of the rival countries.” In India, it reported that right-wing Hindu nationalist political party, the BJP had asked Mirza to reconsider her decision to marry a Pakistan while in Pakistan centrist parties voiced their congratulations.
‘The Guardian’ quoted Mirza’s father as saying that the couple will be based in Dubai but continue to represent their countries in their respective sports.
The paper also noted that a Pakistani cricketer has married a high-profile Indian woman before. The former Test batsman Mohsin Khan, now the Pakistan team’s chief selector, married the Indian actress Reena Roy in the 1980s. The marriage later broke down.
According to ‘The Independent’,Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani plans to greet couple with a lavish reception should they visit Malik’s home country.
