Sania Mirza, who had been handed a wild card in the Indian Wells tennis tournament, will open her campaign against Mariya Koryttseva of Ukraine in the USD 4,500,000 event.
Sania, ranked 87th in the world, will meet 96th-ranked Koryttseva for the first time in her career. The 22-year-old Hyderabadi, who made a comeback earlier this year from a wrist injury, has been training with American tennis star Andre Agassi&aposs trainer Gil Reyes in Las Vegas and have already made a remarkable return in the circuit by winning her first Grand Slam title with Mahesh Bhupathi in the mixed doubles event of the Australian Open. If Sania wins her match against Koryttseva, she will next meet 12th-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy, who got a bye in the first round. Meanwhile, in the doubles, Sania and partner Chia-Jung Chuang of Chinese Taipei will kick off their campaign against Shahar Peer of Israel and Gisela Dulko of Argentina.
