Sania goes down to Tamarine; out of Aegon Classic

Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza squandered a set advantage to go down against Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the second round of the Aegon Classic here.

Sania, who was playing her first tournament since marrying Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and first since February, was impressive when she pocketed the opening set against her experienced rival before rain drove Sania to the locker room on Wednesday.

The break in the WTA tournament, that serves as a warm-up for Wimbledon, seemed to have worked well for the Thai player who came back to edge out the Indian in the second set and force a decider.

The final set, however, saw the 14th seed Tanasugarn playing in her elements as she dropped just one game before wrapping off the match, spread over two days on the grass courts at Edgbaston due to rain, in her favour yesterday.and first since February, was impressive when she pocketed the opening set against her experienced rival before rain drove Sania to the locker room on Wednesday.
