She has that never-say-die attitude, which spurs her on to face challenges head-on. Just when the world at large was tut-tutting about her sliding ranking, Indian tennis star Sania Mirza went ahead and picked up her maiden Grand Slam title in the Australian Open.

Partnered with Mahesh Bhupathi, she won the mixed doubles title beating Nathalie Dechy (France) and Andy Ram (Israel) 6-3, 6-1 in the final in Melbourne. Now that she’s back home, a relaxed Sania chats about her game, chilling out and more.

This is the first time an all-Indian team has won a grand slam. Will it change the way we are perceived in the international tennis arena?
I think Indians have already earned a lot of respect in the international tennis arena and this recent win would certainly enhance that.

What’s that one area in your game that you are going to focus on in the coming weeks?
I will continue to try and work on my weaknesses and improve on my strengths as I have been doing ever since I picked up a racquet as a six-year-old.

This is your first grand slam title. Seeing the way both of you played, would you say Mahesh Bhupathi and you are lucky for each other?
It’s not just luck factor, I would say that our games compliment each other!

And what are your main strengths as individual players, which compliment the other?
Mahesh has a world-class backhand, whereas I prefer the forehand side. And while he’s wonderful at the net, my strength is from the baseline.

There were reports that Yuvraj Singh gave you a lot of advice regarding you injury
Yes, Yuvi recommended a spiral therapist, who was instrumental in curing my wrist injury.
