Hyderabad: The shooting of a commercial advertisement featuring tennis star Sania Mirza at the historic Mecca Masjid has sparked a row with the minorities welfare department seeking a report from the mosque officials.

The ad was shot on Monday without the permission of the department, which is responsible for the upkeep of the 17th century mosque.

Kolkata: Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza was unhappy with her performance in the opening round of doubles at the US$ 1,75,000 WTA Sunfeast Open on Wednesday.

“I am not happy with my performance, because I did a lot of mistakes,” Sania said at the post match media meet after she partnered South African Liezel Huber to victory against the Indian pair of Ragini Vimal and Archana Venkatram.

Kolkata: Sania Mirza started off her Sunfeast Open campaign in style with a thumping straight set win over compatriot Rushmi Chakravarthi.

As former India cricket captain Saurav Ganguly watched on with the others, it took Sania less than an hour to win the first round encounter 6-0, 6-4.

New Delhi: Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza on Monday withdrew from the WTA Sunfeast Open to be held in Kolkata.

“I was really looking forward to participating at Sunfeast Open 2007. I am very upset that this injury is keeping me away from the courts,” Sania said in a statement.

New Delhi: Seems like Sania Mirza will get a respite from the Mecca Masjid controversy.

Masjid officials have asked police to withdraw the case against the tennis star.

Sania had later apologised for shooting a commercial in the Masjid premises on December 13.
