The 20th seed easily dispatched Sania 6-2, 6-4 in 81 minutes, on court No. 13.

It was a mixed bag for India on the opening day of the final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open. Sania Mirza scored a 77-minute 6-3, 6-2 win over Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal while Somdev Devvarman came up short against South African Kevin Anderson, falling 3-6, 4-6, 3-6 in a little over two hours.
