Sania retires hurt from Olympic tennis singles

Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza today crashed out of the women’s singles event at the Olympics after retiring midway through her opening round match against Czech Iveta Benesova here.
Sania trailed 1-6 1-2 against Benesova before making a tearful exit after her a right wrist injury forced her to concede the match.

Indian tennis queen Sania Mirza has appreciated the idea of playing exhibition matches in Pakistan.

“Its great idea if I get an opportunity to come to Pakistan and play tennis there,” she told reporters on Tuesday night at Olympic Green Tennis Centre after watching her men’s doubles team comprising of Bhupathi/Peas beating French pair of Monfils/Simon 6-3, 6-3”.

Star tennis duo of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi marched ahead to boost India’s sagging campaign after medal hopes of shuttler Saina Nehwal and archer Mangal Singh Champia abruptly ended at the Beijing Olympic Games Wednesday. The country’s challenge in women’s tennis was also cut short, with the doubles combination of Sania Mirza and Sunitha Rao fading out 4-6 4-6 against the top seeded Russian Dinara Safina and Swetlana Kuznetsova in the second round. Sania went out of the singles draw earlier in the week as she pulled out midway through a first round match with her wrist injury flaring up.

The Indian pair looked the champions they were not long ago as they swept aside the challenge of Brazilians Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa to reach the men’s doubles quarterfinal of the tennis competition at the Beijing Olympics here today.
