Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza fell at the final hurdle of the qualifying rounds of the women’s edition of the Rogers Cup on Sunday.

Sania Mirza moved up three places to be No. 71 in the WTA singles rankings issued on Monday. She, however, slipped to 46 in doubles, a loss of two slots.

Mahesh Bhupathi, meanwhile, replaced Leander Paes at No. 7, a gain of one position, in the ATP doubles rankings.

It was a mixed day for the Indians at Vancouver as Prakash Amritraj crashed out of the $175,000 Oldum Brown VanOpen at the hands of former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis rather tamely in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Keeping the Indian flag flying high is top seed Sania Mirza, who was made to work hard by American qualifier Mallory Cecil before prevailing 6-4, 7-5.

The initial qualifier field announced today for the Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open is stronger than the main draw field for the 2008 W&SFG Women’s Open. Last year’s main draw had a cutoff of 99, while this year’s qualifier field has a cutoff of 90.
