In all probability when Saina Nehwal gets married, news channels will cover the wedding, as they did in the case of her accidental peer, Sania Mirza. But the similarity will be strictly skin deep. For whatever Sania’s current ranking might be, and however much disappointment we may feel in the decline of one of India’s most promising athletes, interest in her continues to burn bright and glow hard into the night.

It was a heady day in 2003, when Sania Mirza burst onto the stream of Indian sport consciousness, an awareness that if India were to ever have a world beater in an individual sport , it would not be a hirsute male, but a member of the weaker, fairer sex.

Somdev Dev Varman’s ranking remained unchanged at 103, in the latest Association of Tennis Professionals ranking chart, released Monday. Prakash Amritraj too remained static at 327.
In the doubles chart, Leander Paes’ (6) and Mahesh Bhupathi’s (7) rankings remained unchanged as well.

Sania Mirza lost to England’s Heather Watson 6-2, 6-4 in the singles final of the Wrexham Challenger tennis tournament in Wales on Sunday, according to information received here.
On Saturday night, Sania, combining with Emma Laine, also lost the doubles final against Tara Moore and Stephenson 6-2, 3-6, 11-13.
